Traffic Calming Program

The City of Cathedral City’s Traffic Calming Program is designed to improve neighborhood safety and quality of life by addressing speeding, cut-through traffic, and other traffic-related concerns on City streets. The program uses a combination of education, enforcement, and roadway design tools to encourage safer driving behavior while balancing emergency access, mobility, and neighborhood livability.

Traffic calming measures generally fall into two categories:

  • Speed reduction, such as signage, speed feedback signs, speed cushions, or roadway design features that encourage slower driving.
  • Traffic volume reduction, which discourages non-local cut-through traffic and directs it to appropriate arterial roadways.
Temporary Traffic Calming Study

Residents who are experiencing traffic safety concerns may request a temporary traffic calming study by contacting the City’s Engineering Division.

When submitting a request, residents should provide:

  • The location of the concern (street name and limits)
  • A description of the issue (speeding, cut-through traffic, safety concerns, etc.)
  • Contact information (name, address, phone number, and email)

City staff will review each request to determine whether a temporary traffic calming study is warranted and initiate the study process.
