Red Light Camera Program

The City of Cathedral City has three Red Light Camera Intersections:

  1. DATE PALM & RAMON (activated on March 1, 2006)
  2. DATE PALM & VISTA CHINO (activated on February 4, 2009)
  3. RAMON & LANDAU (activated on February 4, 2009)

Red Light CameraCity Council authorized the initial Red Light Camera program on May 25, 2005 after receiving a staff report from Police Chief Stan Henry who recommended a beta pilot program to be administered by American Traffic Solutions, Inc.(ATS) based in Scottsdale, Arizona. The intersection of Date Palm & Ramon became the initial beta site and after a (1-year pilot program), the Police determined that the program was very effective for public safety, by significantly reducing Red Light violations. The other two intersections followed later in 2009. The costs of the three Red Light Camera installations were borne by ATS, Inc. (no installation cost to the City). The amounts of the Red Light citation fines are regulated by the State of California. Citations are payable to Riverside Superior Court- Indio.

The Red Light Camera intersections flash strobe lights and simultaneously take color digital photos (and a video clip) of Red Light Camera violations. The possible violation (data) is immediately sent from the intersection’s traffic signal controller via fiber-optic cable to ATS in Scottsdale, Arizona. ATS Technicians review the photos & video of the possible violation and then forward those potential violations to Cathedral City Police Department, where an assigned Red Light Camera officer makes a 2nd opinion review. If CCPD concurs, they authorize ATS to issue the citation to the vehicle’s registered owner from the ATS Violations Processing Center in Scottsdale. If the registered owner of the vehicle was not driving the vehicle at the time, an ATS procedure allows the citation to be readdressed to the actual person determined to have been the driver at the time of the violation.
