John Aguilar was elected by the voters to the City Council on November 8, 2016. He had previously served on the Council as an appointed member from September 2014 to early December 2014, and once more following former Councilmember Stan Henry’s certified election to Mayor in December 2014 to December 2016. John accepted the council seat in order to encourage greater participation from Cathedral City’s Hispanic community as well as other underrepresented communities. John believes strongly in a government that is transparent and open to all residents, a government that works collaboratively with local businesses and community based organizations, and a government that strives to increase the City’s economic development for creating more jobs, housing options, and opportunities for its residents.
Recently retired from Riverside County, John served as Deputy Director for Riverside County Economic Development Agency’s Housing Authority.
Prior to his current service on the City Council and work for the County, John was unanimously appointed to the City Council to fill a vacancy. This played an important role as it allowed the City Council to achieve a quorum and take legislative actions to improve the business climate and quality of life within Cathedral City. Moreover, he previously worked as the Real Estate Director for the San Francisco Presidio Trust and the Director of Commercial Real Estate for the Port of Oakland. John also held many professional municipal positions in City Government in Idaho and California.
Born and raised in Northern California, John graduated with a Master of Public Administration degree from California State University, Chico and holds a California Real Estate Broker’s license. John and his partner of 25 years reside at Date Palm Country Club. John is a member of the Board of Directors for Shelter from the Storm and Cabot Yerxa Museum.
