This page is intended to better inform the public about our new Red Light Camera drivers safety experiment at “northbound” Date Palm Drive at the intersection of Ramon Road. This is a one-year test promoted by the
Police Department to see if the cameras will reduce red light violations at the City’s highest traveled intersection (70,000 cars/day at peak season). This is also the most dangerous City intersection due to its history of red light running related accidents. The system was first activated on February 1, running for 30-days on a test “warning cycle” before being officially put into service on March 1, 2006.

The Red Light Camera system (5 Hi-resolution Cameras, Poles and Strobe lights) Is valued at over $60,000 and was installed at no cost to the City by the manufacturer. It will run for one-year as an experiment to determine if the cameras successfully provide a deterrent to accidents at that intersection caused by red light violations.  The Police Department will report back to City Council in March, 2007 to recommend whether to continue or end the program based on the findings of this 12-month experiment.
