  Mountain Cathedrals

The new sculpture “Mountain Cathedrals” by Michael Paul Thiry was unveiled at its location in the median on North Date Palm Drive, just south of Vista Chino. About 150 people turned out to see the unveiling of the 15-foot high stainless steel sculpture. The sculpture represents the Santa Rosa Mountains, whose granite cliffs reminded early surveyors of the inside of a magnificent cathedral, from which Cathedral City takes its name.

“The sculpture is a work of passion!” the artist said, and that was easily seen as sunlight and colors from the snowcapped mountains sparkled and reflected off the sculpture. At night the three-pronged work is illuminated in white light.

The project is the first entryway sculpture commissioned by the Public Arts Commission as part of the art in public places program, paid for by developer fees.

Other cathedral-themed sculptures will be installed at all the entryways to the City, in keeping with the city’s Marketing Plan to celebrate the community’s name and legend.
