Building Department Helps Celebrate Building Safety Week

Cathedral City, along with the rest of America will be celebrating Building Safety Week from May 5 through 11. The theme this year is “Building Safety: Where You Live, Work and Play.”

Building Safety Week was first observed in 1980 and since then has annually raised public awareness of critical safety issues affecting every person, regardless of age or occupation. These include the structural soundness of the buildings where we live and work, reliability of fire prevention and suppression systems, plumbing and mechanical systems, and energy efficiency and sustainability.

Building Department staff work to ensure the safety of the structures in which all of us live, work, attend school, worship and play. These officials provide the first line of defense against building disasters. They are silent but vigilant guardians who work daily to ensure safety in the building environment.

On Wednesday, May 7, the Building Department will be having refreshments and cookies in the entry/lobby area of City Hall. Attractive educational materials will be available for the community at large; for example, brochures about flood cleanup, mold prevention, green building and preparing for natural disasters. The Fire Department will also have their Hazard House display set up. The public is encouraged to participate and learn about the essential safety work of the Building and Fire Departments.

Our Building Department is a member of the International Code Council. As the sponsor of Building Safety Week, the International Code Council develops the most widely used building safety and fire prevention codes in the nation.

Council to Take Action on Sky Blue Water Sidewalk Project at May 28th Meeting.

Bids were opened Monday April 21st for the Sky Blue Water Trail Sidewalk Improvement Project. Seven bids were received ranging from $142,000 to $246,000. The Engineers estimate of the project was $200,000. Council will vote to accept the low bidder – C. S. Legacy of Chino California.

Currently there are gaps in the side walk in the project area between 33rd Avenue and Ramon Road. The gaps are dirt and grass and difficult to walk on. Often pedestrians are forced to walk out on the street creating a traffic safety hazard for themselves and drivers going through the neighborhood. About 200 students live in the neighborhood, and although there are no schools in the neighborhood, students do walk through the neighborhood to get to bus stops to get to their school

The Cathedral City Boys and Girls Club is nearby on Whispering Palms Trail at Ramon Road. The club has several after school programs for children of all ages. About 600 students are enrolled in these programs and nearly 200 attend daily. Safe sidewalks in the neighborhood are important for safe access to and from schools.

The new sidewalks will also meet with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements improving access for everyone in the neighborhood. Funds for the project come from grants and other State sources. General Fund dollars are not being used for the project.

Mark Your Calendars for World Premier

The Public Arts Commission developed an idea to salute Cathedral City with a world premier musical composition that would help show the city’s commitment to the varied culture of our community. The title of the piece is based on the City’s motto: “Spirit of the Desert.”

The internationally acclaimed composer of musical theatre and concert works, Craig Bohmler, was commissioned to compose the work and Marion Adler, of the prestigious Stratford Festival in Toronto, was asked to write the words. Many people were asked to send in personal observations of what Cathedral City means to them, and now, many months later the work is finished and ready for its premier as the finale of the 2007 – 2008 Live Arts concert season.

Performers will be: Layna Chianakas, mezzo-soprano, Andrew Eisenmann, baritone, the James Workman Middle School Concert Choir; and a septet of professional musicians from the Coachella Valley and Los Angeles. The composer will be featured on the piano. In addition to “Spirit of the Desert,” two other song collections by Mr. Bohmler will be performed by the composer and Ms. Chianakas and Mr. Eisenmann.

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 23, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the Cathedral City High School Auditorium.

The Public Arts Commission wishes to thank: The Community Foundation, serving Riverside and San Bernardino counties; NAI Consulting, offering project management and engineering services for municipalities; Harris & Associates; Granite Construction; Choctaw Construction; Total Marketing Partners; James R. Peters Construction Management & Inspection; MSA Consulting and The Palm Springs Opera Guild for making the Live Arts performing arts series possible.
