Progress Report on City Hall Website Redesign

Several months ago the City Council approved a redesign of the City’s website, building on the site we already have and bringing in a new look, site map to make it easier for the public to find information and a new content management tool making it easier for departments to maintain and update their own web pages.

An RFP was issued and the Marketing Committee and staff recommended Vision Internet to redesign the website. Council approved that recommendation. Vision Internet specializes in designing City and County websites and their expertise is in organizing city information in a user friendly manner. They have designed many city websites across the country and in California.

In the past weeks the contract has been finalized and a day-and-a-half meeting was held to launch the project. One of the outcomes of the meeting was agreement on the “wireframe” for the new site. A wireframe is not the design or the look of the site, but a template of what information will be on the City’s home page and generally how that information will be laid out.

Vision Internet is in the process of analyzing our current site map, developing a new one, and beginning to map pages to the new site. Soon, departments will be asked to review their web pages to make sure the information on them is current, if the page should be deleted, or if new information is necessary.

While this is going on, Vision Internet will develop two designs for the look of the website. Staff and the Marketing committee will look at these designs and recommend one or the other or the best attributes of both.

One of the benefits of the new website, in addition to easier navigation for citizens, is that departments will be able to update their web pages using basic “Word” skills. And

After that, content from the existing site will be transferred or “migrated” to the new one on a test server where it will be tested and prepared for a final launch. The goal is to complete the project by the end of the fiscal year.
