City Looking for Partners for Ramon Road Commercial Façade Program

The City is looking for commercial;/business partners along the Ramon Road corridor in Cathedral City interested in improving and renovating their signs, doors, windows, awnings, graphics, exterior light, landscaping, decorative fencing, façade treatment, parking surface, parking installation, among other improvements. All improvements must meet the City’s Building Codes and design guidelines for the project area and must provide make a substantial improvement to the business’s appearance to be included in the program.

City Redevelopment Funds will reimburse half of the costs for the improvements up to $615 per linear feet for businesses that apply for the program and are approved.

To learn more about the program, the specific target area and to obtain application materials contact Mitch Nieman, Development Project Manager at 760-770-0348. Properties that are outside the target area may be eligible for the program with City Council Approval.

Finance Advisory Committee to Report to Community

The Cathedral City Council created a Finance Advisory Committee to recommend how funds generated by Measure Q would be applied if it passed, or how to find additional revenues to fund basic City services if it did not. Measure Q (a ¾ of one percent sales tax) was on the November 2006 ballot and was not passed by Cathedral City voters.

The Finance Advisory Committee has been meeting with City Staff since August, looking at current revenues, revenue projections, where general funds are expended and information from Police, Fire and Public Works on ever increasing demands for service from the City’s growing population.

Cathedral City is highly dependent on sales tax for its revenue. New businesses, such as the Burlington Coat Factory, Harbor Freight, a new Stater Brothers, among other businesses opening all over the City, and over 300,000 square feet of commercial space under review or approved will help.

However, Cathedral City does not have the revenue to meet the increasing demand for police, fire, emergency medical and public works services. These areas are staffed at 1990’s levels for a 2008 population.

The City has been staffed to meet essential services only, and is now spending down its reserves to continue to do that and to attempt to address the needs of is growing population.

The Finance Advisory Committee will be holding public meetings in March and early April with neighborhood and business groups to present their findings – dates and times to be announced. The purpose of the meetings is to share what the Committee has learned, discuss options, and to gather community input.

Community Assistance Applications Available Online

Applications are now available for Cathedral City’s Community Assistance Program. To be eligible for assistance, the applicant must be a community-based, non-profit social organization, or area service provider that offers a program or service that benefits the residents and/or businesses of Cathedral City. CATHEDRAL CANYON DRIVE INFORMATION
Sewer and Street work is on schedule with exception of Cathedral Canyon Drive based upon information below:

The City is on schedule with the sewer project and the contractor has completed the sewer installation on Cathedral Canyon Drive. Cathedral Canyon Drive has been closed to thru-traffic as preparation has been made to install a storm drain system on this street.

However, the storm drain system – not being paid for by the Cove Improvement Assessment District – had to be redesigned, which has caused a delay. The utility lines were not shown in the right locations on official maps, often times shallower than indicated. Once identified, the true locations required a different style of pipe and catch basins on Cathedral Canyon Drive, Palo Verde Drive and Tahquitz Road.

Because storm drain pipes are made at the factory specifically for each job, additional time was needed to fill the storm drain pipe order for the redesign work.

The pipe is now on-site and being used to construct the storm drain system. Once the storm drain pipe is installed and the catch basins built, street construction on Cathedral Canyon Drive will resume with the installation of curb and gutter, drive approaches, cross gutters and spandrels. After these items are completed, Cathedral Canyon Drive will be graded and it will be paved.

It is estimated that the storm drain work will be finished and Cathedral Canyon Drive will be paved early in 2008. The sewer and street work on all other areas of the Cove project are progressing per the project schedule. Cove Phase 2 work is scheduled to begin when Phase 1 work is complete.
