Big Jazz Concert this Friday, February 1st!

Two generations of performers come together for a musical treat, Friday, February 1, 2008 at 7 PM at the Mary Pickford Theatre, when legendary jazz pianist Buddy Greco and singer Lezlie Anders team up with the Cathedral City High School Jazz Band. The free concert is part of the 2007-08 LIVEARTS Performing Arts Series being presented by the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission.

Buddy and Lezlie will perform four outstanding musical numbers and the jazz band will provide the rest of the evening’s entertainment.

Mr. Greco, the world’s foremost jazz pianist and singer, began his career with the Benny Goodman Orchestra. He and his wife, singer Lezlie Anders, own “Buddy Greco’s”, the nationally acclaimed jazz club in Cathedral City. Mr. Greco has recorded 68 albums and over 100 singles. Well known as an international recording artist and performer, he is one of the most prolific entertainers in show business. He has appeared in every major concert hall, theatre and nightclub in the world, as well as in movies and television.

Ms. Anders is a recording artist and leader of her own orchestra. While she was appearing at Las Vegas’ Desert Inn she and Buddy met, and the rest is history! She stars in the stage production “Fever”, a tribute to Miss Peggy Lee. Lezlie and Buddy have generously donated their talents for this historic concert.

The High school jazz band will be directed by Mr. Gregory Whitmore, who, as a drum major, led the University of Michigan Marching Band and has been named in “Who’s Who of American Teachers” for the last four years. He recently receive an Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce Orion Award “Educator of the Year Award” for Cathedral City High School. The Cathedral City High School Jazz Band performed at Carnegie Hall, Disneyland and other prestigious venues around the country.

The Performing Arts Series is made possible by The Community Foundation; NAI Consulting; Harris & Associates; Granite Construction; Choctaw Construction; Total Marketing Partners; James R. Peters Construction Management & Inspection and MSA Consulting.

Cathedral City Streets Affected by Tour de Palm Springs

On Sat. Feb. 9th, the Tour de Palm Springs will be having its annual bike ride event throughout the valley.

One of the routes involves the Ramon Rd./DaVall Rd. intersection. Due to the number of riders in the event, traffic delays are expected at this intersection. Traffic delays are also expected on DaVall Rd. s/b from 30th Ave. to Dinah Shore Drive, due to the limited lane availability. Residents and visitors in the Century Park area of Cathedral City are urged to use alternate routes between the hours of 8am and 4pm.

CATHEDRAL CANYON DRIVE INFORMATION
Sewer and Street work is on schedule with exception of Cathedral Canyon Drive based upon information below:

The City is on schedule with the sewer project and the contractor has completed the sewer installation on Cathedral Canyon Drive. Cathedral Canyon Drive has been closed to thru-traffic as preparation has been made to install a storm drain system on this street.

However, the storm drain system – not being paid for by the Cove Improvement Assessment District – had to be redesigned, which has caused a delay. The utility lines were not shown in the right locations on official maps, often times shallower than indicated. Once identified, the true locations required a different style of pipe and catch basins on Cathedral Canyon Drive, Palo Verde Drive and Tahquitz Road.

Because storm drain pipes are made at the factory specifically for each job, additional time was needed to fill the storm drain pipe order for the redesign work.

The pipe is now on-site and being used to construct the storm drain system. Once the storm drain pipe is installed and the catch basins built, street construction on Cathedral Canyon Drive will resume with the installation of curb and gutter, drive approaches, cross gutters and spandrels. After these items are completed, Cathedral Canyon Drive will be graded and it will be paved.

It is estimated that the storm drain work will be finished and Cathedral Canyon Drive will be paved early in 2008. The sewer and street work on all other areas of the Cove project are progressing per the project schedule. Cove Phase 2 work is scheduled to begin when Phase 1 work is complete.
