Fountain of Life Gets Attention

Cathedral City’s award winning Fountain of Life is a much loved attraction in Cathedral City. People from around the Valley and the world come so see it. Local children love to play in it. Visitors love to sit in the shade and watch it. Frankly, all that love has left the fountain a little weary. Over the next approximately 30 days the fountain’s tiles will be scrubbed and power washed, damage to the soft ground surface will be repaired, metal leaves on the fountain columns will be repaired, the fountain lighting will be upgraded, and when repairs are complete, the water will shoot higher in the air. Soon, there will be a cleaner, brighter and more dramatic Fountain of Life to fall in love with all over again.

City Council OK’s Traffic Safety Program Plan

Cathedral City has 44 existing traffic signals within its city limits (42 full traffic signals and 2 pedestrian flashing signals). The condition of these signals is declining at many intersections because they are old and outdated. The City’s traffic engineering staff proposed to Council a draft multi-year plan that had been reviewed and prioritized by the Cathedral City Streets and Transportation Commission. The Commission had originally set re-striping of the streets as their #1 priority, but that work was recently been completed. The remaining four priorities are:
bullet

Installing new battery backups for the traffic signals. To provide continued signal operation during power outages or low voltage incidents.

bullet

Upgrading traffic signal controllers and cabinets (about 20 intersections a year – one per intersection) to allow for more flexible traffic flow timing.

bullet

Installing new traffic signal detection cameras (about 5 intersections in FY06/07 – 4 cameras at each location). These are not speed enforcement cameras, but cameras that sense the presence of a car in a left turn lane or at an intersection to help the flow of traffic.

bullet

Installing new illuminated traffic signal street name signs (about 30 intersections in FY 07/07 – 4 signs per intersection). The illuminated signs will be blue and white and be much easier to read – similar to the new sign on Date Palm Drive and Ramon Road.

The Council approved a budget of $750,000 for the program as the beginning of a multi-year Traffic Safety Program in an effort to improve traffic efficiency and safety in the Cathedral City.

Planning Staff Recognized by Council

Two members of the Planning Department – Ken Davis and Nancy Greene were given Certificates of Recognition by the City Council for providing excellent customer service. Bud Kopp was also given a Certificate of Recognition for his many contribution to the City during is tenure as Senior Planner.

New Brazilian Restaurant Coming to IMAX Building

The City Council, acting as the Cathedral City Redevelopment Agency Board, approved the lease of 4,707 square feet in the IMAX Building for a Brazilian Churrascarias (Grill House) by developers Blue Royale. Churrasco, the Brazilian word for barbecue, is a centuries old culinary tradition that began in the prairies of Brazil. In the churrasco tradition, gauchos, Brazilian cowboys, barbeque marinated beef, pork, and poultry on long skewers over an open-fire pit. In the churrascaria culinary style, diners use a little wooden indicator with green on one end and red on the other to start and stop continuous service. The skewered meat is carved right onto your plate, hot from the open fire grill. the gauchos circle the dining hall with the choicest cuts, inviting you to eat until you are full. This continuous service, called ridihzo, transforms your meal into a spectacular performance.

Storm Drain Work:

Storm drain pipe installation on Terrace Road at Chuperosa Lane to Cathedral Canyon

Asphalt grinding will occur on Terrace Road between the East Cathedral Canyon Channel and Palo Verde for storm drain installation.

Storm drain pipe installation will occur on Terrace Road at East Cathedral Channel and Chuperosa. This includes asphalt grinding on Terrace Road between the East Cathedral Canyon Channel and Palo Verde for the storm drains to be installed.

Terrace Road Note:

Sewer work has been completed on Terrace Road. Now storm drain work has started on Terrace next to the Presbyterian Church Parking lot and Chuperosa. This heavy construction involves digging through the East Cathedral Channel and installing catch basins, inlets and a 54” Storm Drain Pipe in Terrace. This construction will progress west along the north lane of Terrace. In addition to the storm drain improvements, curb and gutter will be installed on Terrace prior to final paving.

As the storm drain work moves westward, traffic will be directed to the south side of the street and temporary detours may occur on Terrace.

It will take several months to complete all the construction on Terrace Road. During this time, Terrace will continue to have temporary pavement. The contractor regularly fills potholes to prevent deep ruts in the roadway and uses a motor blade to smooth the surface. During construction, the speed limit on Terrace is 25 mph to ensure everyone’s safety, and there are 25 mph speed limit signs posted along Terrace.

Working on Terrace Road is one of the most challenging parts of the construction work in the Cove. The City is working with the contractor to keep the temporary paving on Terrace in drivable condition and will continue to monitor the roadway condition throughout the construction.

Constructing major infrastructure, such as sewers, in an existing neighborhood is difficult. Sewers, water lines, drainage and other infrastructure are typically dug and placed before anyone moves into a neighborhood. The Cove project is providing new sewers, storm drains, water lines and streets in a neighborhood with over 1,500 households and where over 4,000 residents already live. The Cove community is experiencing these challenges first hand with the expectation that the improvements will benefit everyone in the Cove and make living there even better.

More information and a progress map is available on the City’s website at http://www.cathedralcity.gov/cove.
