Project is On Schedule

Sewer Hookup Information:

It typically takes 4-6 months to complete all of the construction work on a street for the Cove project. Once the sewer is installed, the new pavement is done and the contractor has completed all work on a street, the City Engineer will send notification by letter to property owners that they can connect to the sewer with the procedure for doing so.

Work Scheduled Week of 2/5/07

Sewer Work:

Curb Work Note:
When the Contractor installs curbs and driveway approaches, residents will be asked to not park or drive into their driveways and instead park across the street for up to 14 days so that the concrete can cure. Once the curb construction is done, residents will be able to park in their driveways and on their side of the street. Prior notice in the form of door hangers will be given to the residents by the Contractor when this curb work is being done

Storm Drain Work:

bullet

Terrace Road

Storm drain pipe installation will occur on Terrace Road at East Cathedral Channel and Chuperosa. This includes asphalt grinding on Terrace Road between the East Cathedral Canyon Channel and Palo Verde for the storm drains to be installed.

Terrace Road Note:
Sewer work has been completed on Terrace Road. Now storm drain work has started on Terrace next to the Presbyterian Church Parking lot and Chuperosa. This heavy construction involves digging through the East Cathedral Channel and installing catch basins, inlets and a 54” Storm Drain Pipe in Terrace. This construction will progress west along the north lane of Terrace. In addition to the storm drain improvements, curb and gutter will be installed on Terrace prior to final paving.

As the storm drain work moves westward, traffic will be directed to the south side of the street and temporary detours may occur on Terrace.

It will take several months to complete all the construction on Terrace Road. During this time, Terrace will continue to have temporary pavement. The contractor regularly fills potholes to prevent deep ruts in the roadway and uses a motor blade to smooth the surface. During construction, the speed limit on Terrace is 25 m.p.h. to ensure everyone’s safety, and there are 25 mph speed limit signs posted along Terrace.

Working on Terrace Road is one of the most challenging parts of the construction work in the Cove. The City is working with the contractor to keep the temporary paving on Terrace in drivable condition and will continue to monitor the roadway condition throughout the construction.

Constructing major infrastructure, such as sewers, in an existing neighborhood is difficult. Sewers, water lines, drainage and other infrastructure are typically dug and placed before anyone moves into a neighborhood. The Cove project is providing new sewers, storm drains, water lines and streets in a neighborhood with over 1,500 households and where over 4,000 residents already live. The Cove community is experiencing these challenges first hand with the expectation that the improvements will benefit everyone in the Cove and make living there even better.

NEW Electronic Waste Recycling Program: this is a new program that I would like to promote. The new program was established to create a drop-off location that is more convenient for those residents that don’t want to wait until April and Nov to dispose of electronic stuff. But…the City will still host its annual April electronic recycling event at Lowe’s on Saturday April 7th.

Varner Road/Edom Hill Renovation Project

The paving of both Varner Road and Edom Hill Road was completed on Monday February 5th. The remaining work includes the grading of the shoulders, striping/painting legends and installation of guard rails. This work will cause only minor disruption to traffic and will be completed by the end of next week.

City Recycling Beats State Goals

AB 939, which went into effect in 1989, requires that all California jurisdictions divert 50% of its waste stream from landfill disposal by the year 2000 and to achieve that goal every year after that. The penalty for not reaching this goal is $10,000 a day in fines. Cathedral City is unique because we don’t use the State’s standard formula to calculate our diversion rate. Cathedral City actually documents EVERY diversion (recycling, reuse, source reduction) programs that are implemented in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors of the City.

Deanna Pressgrove, the City’s Environmental Conservation Manager, was recently notified that the California Integrated Waste Management Board approved Cathedral City’s AB 939 Report for 2003 and 2004 – the latest information the Board has reviewed for any City.

For Year 2003: Cathedral City successfully diverted 55% of its waste stream from landfill disposal.

For Year 2004: Cathedral City successfully diverted 54% of its waste stream from landfill disposal.

The Environmental Conservation Program has been successful because the community, contractors and businesses all support the program and actively recycle.

Soccer Park Taking Shape

The 30th Avenue Soccer Park is taking shape! The sod that has been growing and strengthening while waiting for placement will be planted in the next few weeks. There will be a one-time “burn-in” test of the park lights from dusk to 11 p.m., February 12, 13, 14, and 15 to ensure the lights are functioning properly. Nearby residents were sent an advisory letter. The soccer park lights will only be used until 8 p.m. during soccer season.

More Love by the Pound

A reminder about the Saturday, February 10th, First Anniversary Celebration at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus. There will be free food and sodas, homemade cookies for sale, pets available for adoption, and a special “Pooch Smooch Booth.” Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of their adopted pets. The event begins at noon and will be held at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, 72-050 Pet Land Place, Thousand Palms, Calif. 92276.

Jazz Band Next Public Arts Commission Live Arts Concert

The Cathedral City High School Jazz Band will perform Friday, February 23rd, at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral City Council Chambers . If you haven’t heard this group, you’re in for a treat. They’re talented beyond their years and can swing with the best jazz bands.
