Cove Improvement District Project Update

The process of installing new sewer lines, hook-up laterals, storm drains, water lines, curbs and gutters, and road resurfacing is complex – but so far right on schedule.

Although each street is somewhat different, the process for completing a street takes 4 – 6 months. Installing new sewer lines and laterals is just one part of the job.

Once the sewer mainline is constructed and the laterals dug, the sewer line must be tested, including pressure and video tests, and be corrected, if necessary.

That’s just the beginning – not the end of the project. There are many other steps that must follow.

If necessary, new waterlines, storm drains, and gas lines need to be dug, installed and tested. In some cases, existing water service connections need to be relocated.

After that, curb and gutter construction can begin. Curbs and gutters are placed on one side of the street at a time. Once laid, the concrete for the curbs and gutters must cure for 10 – 14 days before it can be driven on. When the curbs are in place, construction on individual driveway approaches begins – which also take 10 – 14 days to cure. This whole phase can take 4 – 6 weeks.

Next curb returns and spandrels are constructed and cross gutters at intersections.

Finally, and only after all these other steps are completed, the street gets its two layers of paving – a base layer and a final layer, finished off with manhole and valve placement. Every effort is made to pave both layers on the same day.

There is much more to the job than simply installing the sewer lines and laterals, filling in the holes and paving the street but, in the end, the Cove will have sewers, waterlines, and smooth safe roads. That’s what we are all working for.

Today (Tuesday the 9th), temporary asphalt is being placed in the sewer and lateral trenches and potholes on Terrace. That will make the ride much smoother until the final surface is laid.
