City Makes Big Strides in Water Conservation

In January 2005, the City submitted a grant application to the State of California Department of Water Resources Water Use Efficiency Program: Section A - Urban Water Use Efficiency Implementation Project. The City proposed an Urban Best Management Practice Project to upgrade of the landscape irrigation systems at city parks.

Cathedral City received $36,900 from the California Department of Water Resources to implement its proposed water conservation project – one of only twenty-five projects funded in the state for urban water use efficiency projects.

The grant money was used to install innovative irrigation system control devices and to upgrade various aspects of the park irrigation systems at Panorama Park and Century Park.

The grant funding was specifically targeted to assist with the installation of an irrigation system upgrade that monitors the moisture content of the soil and controls the amount of watering released by the irrigation system. The new control System was developed by H2O Strategies, Inc. of Manhattan Beach, California.

In addition to the installation of the sensor system devices, the City conducted Landscape Irrigation audits and other upgrades to the irrigation systems were completed: old wiring, broken valves, and all controllers (time clocks) were replaced.

The goals of the project are to reduce irrigation water usage, reduce waste-water run-off as a result of over irrigation, and to enhance overall water conservation efforts through more effective water management practices.

Over a 12 month period, water usage at Century Park has dropped 36.6% -- a reduction of over 6 millions gallons! Over a 13-month period, water usage at Panorama Park dropped 29% -- a reduction of nearly 8 million gallons. The financial savings to the City is $13,500.

Fountainworks Next Week – Make a SPLASH!

Don’t miss this year’s Fountainworks next week on Tuesday, July 3rd, from 7 PM to 11 PM in Cathedral City’s Town Square. The 29 Palms Marine Corps band will perform at 7 PM. The high-energy, Las Vegas-style group Splash will perform three 45-miute sets after that. The group of musicians and singers are in demand across the country for entertaining at high profile events. The event will be catered by New Leaf Catering and for modest price you can purchase such tasty food as Peach Bar-B-Que Tri Tip Sandwiches, Domestic Beer Braised Brats with Grilled Onion & Spicy Mustard, grilled sweet corn, gourmet ice cream bars and other tasty treats. Admission to Fountainworks is free and there is plenty of free covered parking right across from Town Square. Bring a chair or blanket and kick off the Independence Day holiday.

The City wants to thank the generous businesses and organizations who are sponsoring the event: Palm Springs Motors (Platinum Sponsor), Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services, The Printing Place, Stone & Youngberg (Gold Sponsors), Cathedral City Auto Center (Silver Sponsor), Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce, Nicolino’s Italian Restaurant (Bronze Sponsors), Liebert Cassify Whotmore, Moreland & Associates (Donors).

Summer Shredding Event on July 3rd, Too!

A special summer shredding/energy conservation event for Cathedral City residents will take place immediately before Fountainworks Tuesday, July 3rd from 5 PM to 7 PM in the parking lot adjacent to the Desert IMAX Theatre. The First 500 Cathedral City Residents in attendance will receive a free “Efficiency First” Pack compliments of Community Energy Partnership.
