The 45-piece Desert Cities Pops Band will give a free Holiday concert at the Cathedral City High School Auditorium on December 15th at 7 p.m., part of the Public Arts Commission, Live Arts Series. The band is directed by Will Schaefer, former music director and composer for Walt Disney Television. Holiday Music and Americana is the theme of the 80-minute concert which will featuring the anchor piece, “The Sound of America,” nominated for a 1976 Pulitzer Prize, and narrated by Gloria Greer and Cash Baxter, a holiday medley, Light Cavalry Overture, Bugler’s Holiday and other selections. Dream Homes

The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Dream Homes Assessment District project will be tomorrow, Wednesday, December 13th, at 2 p.m. on Mission Drive between Gene Autry & San Luis Rey Drive. Join Dream Homes neighbors, elected officials, and project leaders as they celebrate the beginning of another huge public works project in Cathedral City. You can even become part of Cathedral City posterity by signing a sewer pipe that will later be used as part of the project – not something you do every day!

It’s the Cold Season

Cold viruses (there are over a hundred different kinds) are spread by direct contact and through the air (coughing, sneezing, etc.).

The best way to avoid getting a cold is to wash your hands regularly – particularly after touching a person or a child with a cold or something they have handled. Colds are easily spread by your hands touching your nose and eyes. Cold viruses are removed by the mechanical action of washing your hands. Ordinary soaps and detergents do not kill the viruses; they just help remove them from your hands. Germicidal hand lotions do not reliably kill rhinovirus, the most important cold virus.

Limit your contact with known cold sufferers, especially during the first three days of their illness. If you have a cold, do your friends and co-workers a favor by following this advice as well.

There’s no cure for a cold or the flue. Antibiotics don’t work against viruses. All you can do to feel better is to treat the symptoms while your body fights off the virus. Medications can help relieve some of the symptoms. Check with your doctor before giving medications to children.

Here are some ways to treat cold symptoms:
bullet

Stay home and rest, especially while you have a fever

bullet

Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke, which can make cold symptoms worse.

bullet

Drink plenty of fluids like water, fruit juices and clear soups.

bullet

Don’t drink alcohol

bullet

Gargle with warm salt water a few times a day to relieve a sore throat. Throat sprays and lozenges can also help relieve pain.

bullet

Use saline (salt water) nose drop to help loosen mucus and moisten the tender skin in your nose.

In most cases, you don’t need to see your doctor when you have a cold or flu. However, if you have any of the following symptoms, call your doctor.

A cold that lasts more than 10 days

“Bikes for Kids” Campaign

Cathedral City Police Officers and Firefighters, in partnership with Toys-R-Us, have raised enough money so that 250 bikes and helmets will brighten the holidays for Cathedral City boys and girls. Another 30 Bikes will be raffled off at a special presentation event on Thursday, December 21, at noon, in front of the Civic Center. The hope is to keep the program going all year long.

Bicycle Safety

And while we are on the topic of bicycles, the following safety tips come from the California Department of Transportation.

Equipment:
bullet

Keep your bicycle maintained and adjusted, with particular emphasis on adequate brakes and tires.

bullet

Your bike should have a good light and reflectors. Wear bright clothing.

bullet

Wear a helmet to protect against head injuries.

bullet

Have a rear view mirror attached to you helmet, glasses or handlebars.

Techniques
bullet

Obey the rules of the road as if you were driving a car – stop at stop signs and red lights, signal before changing lanes.

bullet

Always ride on the right side of the road. Stay in single file. It’s dangerous and illegal to right on the left side of a two-way highway.

bullet

Avoid traveling along the side of cars when passing through intersections – they may turn right in front of you without warning.

bullet

Use extreme caution when passing parked cars, as occupants may not see you when they open their doors or pull out of parking spaces.

bullet

Keep your hands on the handlebars at all times.

bullet

Always yield to pedestrians.

bullet

Remember, your bicycle is small and not easily seen. Do everything you can to make sure you are noticed.
