Tierra del Sol Informational Meetings

Mercy Housing California will hold a neighborhood information meeting on Monday, October 30 at City Hall (downstairs study session room) to answer questions about the new Tierra del Sol project near St. Louis Church. For the convenience of those who have questions, there will be two meetings…one session from 1 to 2 pm and a second session from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

The 75 units are expected to be completed and ready for occupancy in February/March of 2007.

Tierra del Sol is a “HUD 202 Senior Housing” development for very low income households of one or two members with incomes not exceeding $23,000 per year for two persons (less than $20,150 for a single person). The Vice President of Mercy Housing will be here along with the future on-site Property Manager and other staff members. Mercy Housing is not accepting applications as yet, but will be able to tell interested renters about the residency requirements and documentation that will be needed. The Office of Housing Assistance in City Hall (770-0376) is maintaining a list of interested renters.

Big Improvements at Agua Caliente School and Park

Palm Springs Unified School District has launched major improvements at Agua Caliente School and around the Agua Caliente Park in the Dream Homes neighborhood. Construction is not completed, but improvements can already be seen. Tamarisk trees at the western half of the school grounds have been removed. (this row of trees was always collecting dumped items, trash and truants!), and the school parking lots, drop-off areas and fences are being rebuilt.

At the outside perimeter of the school’s property they are building a block wall that will also serve as the rear wall for around 30 to 40 of the adjoining property owners (a big boon to them and to the general appearance of the neighborhood). On the east side of the road and around the classrooms and playground area, stone pilasters and wrought-iron fencing give extra security (replacing the previous chain-link fencing).

These changes will make a big difference in both the appearance and security of the Agua Caliente School and the Park.

A Perfect Audit Every Year Since 1989

In June 1989, The Cathedral City Council adopted an ordinance which establishing a Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fee (“TUMF”) the proceeds of which are placed in a trust fund held by the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG). Funds are used to construct transportation improvements and provide additional capacity needed by the year 2010 to meet l traffic demands that result from new land development in the City and the Coachella Valley.

The fees are collected from developers when they apply for new building permits and are calculated by weighing such factors as whether the project is residential or commercial, the type of commercial development being proposed and square footage.

Each year CVAG audit’s of each participating city to be sure that the correct TUMF amount has been collected for all new projects.

Cathedral City has had perfect audits since the TUMF program began in 1989, thanks to the outstanding effort of Diane Sawa and Wyvette Ganther in the City’s Building Department. Last year the city collected nearly $483,000 in fees.

Several Cathedral City projects are included in CVAG’s top 30 arterial projects, including future traffic flow enhancements on Date Palm Drive and Ramon Road.
