From Madonna to Mitchell

It’s a busy time for the Cathedral City Police Department. Our officers will be helping the Riverside County Sheriff’s and Indio Police Department with the 100,000 or so music fans expected to flock to the annual Coachella Fest this weekend. Madonna headlines the entertainment line up.

Then on Wednesday, Police and Fire will be working at Big League Dreams when two-time world boxing champion Sharmba Mitchell out of Washington, D.C. steps into the ring to battle a former #1 world contender, Mexico-born Jose Luis Cruz, undefeated in his first 33 fights. The Mitchell-Cruz welterweight 10-round clash will headline ESPN2’s “Wednesday Night Fights.” It will be part of a seven-bout boxing event at the sports complex produced by Goosen Tutor Promotions in association with Ringway Promotions. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the first fight begins at 5:30 in the facility’s replica of Yankee Stadium. .$45 General Admission tickets are available through www.ticketweb.com

Voice mail back in order

Thanks to Shelley Salinas and Sandra Hatfield for getting the telephone Voice Mail system for the Civic Center up and running again. It had to be completely rebuilt after the hard drive in the aging phone system ground (or was it groaned?) to a halt. The system was out about four days, when the public was unable to leave messages for Council and City Hall and Police Department employees. Bids are out for a completely new phone system for all departments and facilities of city government. Deadline for submission is mid-June.

Now here’s a twist

On Saturday, Cathedral City High School will hold an Estate Sale in the former Eveleen’s space at the Desert Imax Theatre building. A donor left the high school an entire house full of furniture and other articles to be sold to benefit school activities. Hours of the sale are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Calling all soccer parents, park neighbors

Learn the latest information about the Cathedral city Soccer Park! You’ll hear all about it at a meeting set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at James Workman Middle School. City representatives will be there to give an update and answer questions.

Golfers chip in for dog

Members at Desert Princess Country Club are organizing a golf tournament Thursday, May 25, to raise funds for a second canine unit at the Police Department. Cost of the dog and training is about $15,000. It’s another $40,000 for the vehicle and equipment. Outdoor Resorts recently donated $1,000 toward the canine unit, which is under the supervision of Sgt. Dave Hatfield. Persons who are interested in signing up to play in the tournament can call the general manager at the club.

CVAG considering OHV funds

The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) is considering helping to fund the enforcement of Off Highway Vehicle bans valley-wide. Cathedral City had requested help and other cities and the Sheriff’s Department are also seeking aid. Since OHV use drops in hot weather, the issue will probably not come up for action until September. The City Council held its second reading last night of an ordinance banning all OHV use in the city. The ordinance will take effect at the end of May.

Know your senior rights!

A senior forum on elder abuse will be presented by the State Bar of California at the Cathedral City Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesday, May 3. In addition to the forum, the new State Bar pamphlet, “What Should I know about Elder Abuse,” will be available. Information about Medicare, trusts and wills, legal services and other issues of interests to seniors and their families will also be provided.
