CVS coming to valley, right here

The first drugstore in the Coachella Valley owned by the nation’s second largest chain, CVS, is being planned for the northern part of the community. (The biggest? Walgreen’s). The store, on the northeast corner of Landau and Vista Chino, is in plan check. Nationally, CVS, a Rhode Island-based company, is planning to buy out Sav-on drugstores, typically located in Albertson’s stores.

In the meantime, Long’s pulled permits for a conditional use permit for a slightly larger drugstore at the northwest corner of Date Palm and McCallum, immediately north of the

Former Wal-Mart site, whose plans for a major upgrade received Planning Commission approval March 1.

Campanile, storage units construction

GHA took out 34 more single family dwelling permits this week for the Campanile residential project off Ramon Road east of Date Palm Drive and Cathedral Village Self Storage took out building permits for 235 more units on Date Palm Drive.

Possible change in schools’ schedules

At its next meeting, March 28, the Palm Springs Unified School District Board of Education will consider the possibility of changing the school schedules at Cathedral City Elementary School and Landau Elementary from year ‘round to Track D. If approved, students at both schools would be off in July. Since opening of Rio Vista Elementary, enrollment at these schools is down and a year-round schedule is designed for overcrowded schools.

Potholes fixed on Date Palm

Public Works employees removed 600 sq. ft. of eroded asphalt pavement in the south-bound lanes of Date Palm at 30th Avenue and replaced it with Portland cement. The high traffic volumes and constant water in the intersection made it impossible to maintain asphalt there. “An going pothole problem has been remedied once and for all,” Dale Bolls, facilities manager, said. There are other areas in the city that will be addressed as time permits, but this location received priority because of high traffic volumes, he explained.
