Bomb hoax investigation continues

The Police Department is continuing its investigation of hoax car bomb calls and threats made early today. A call was placed to the Police Department saying a bomb was planted in an abandoned car on Cathedral Canyon Drive. It turned out to be a hoax, but the investigation continues in an effort to determine the identity of the person(s) who committed the crime. Anyone who is convicted of falsely reporting a bomb threat -- a felony -- can spend up to three years in state prison, according to Capt. John Holcomb.

Officers apprehend graffiti vandals

Police officers successfully apprehended three 17-year-old boys fleeing Cathedral City High School after they allegedly sprayed graffiti on the building’s exterior last weekend. The officers also retrieved spray cans used during the vandalism and arrested the juveniles, who were later released to their parents. Two live in Rancho Mirage and one lives in Cathedral City.

Subsequently, officers from the Special Enforcement Detail served search warrants on the residences and seized additional evidence implicating the juveniles in the graffiti vandalism. The case is being forwarded to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

For anything to do with animals, call this number ….

The phone number for the new Animal Campus shelter and field services is 1-866-493-7387. Residents of Cathedral City and other participating cities can call that number for information about the shelter, pet adoptions, dog licensing, field services such as barking dogs, events and volunteering.  The shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.  Field services are available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, an officer is on stand by during off hours.

Pet lovers looking to adopt a dog or cat can read descriptions of animals in the shelter by logging on to the shelter’s website, www.riversideshelter.com/thous.htm.  Eventually, a photo of each pet will also be available. Shelter staff is also investigating the possibility of putting live web cams in the kennel areas.

Drive time reduced on East Palm Canyon

The City Council recently received a report from Traffic Engineer Hui Lai showing that removal of the left turn arrows along East Palm Canyon Drive from Cathedral Canyon to Date Palm Drive during a 90-day test period accomplished what was intended.  Removal of the arrows and signal controller updates accomplished the following:

bullet Reduced the drive time on EPC between Date Palm and Cathedral Canyon 50%, from about 3-4 minutes to about 1-2 minutes.
bulletIncreased the average speed in the downtown area from 23 mph to 40 mph, a 59% increase.
bulletIncreased the level of service from an F (failing) to a C, which is excellent for a major thoroughfare with 35,000 cars a day, according to Lai..
bulletProvided signal interconnect
bulletProvided smoother flowing east-west traffic without jeopardizing safety.  (Police reports find no accidents related to arrow removals.)

Revivals is revived

The Cathedral City Planning Commission this week unanimously approved a conditional use permit to allow Revivals used clothing store to reopen in Cathedral City, this time at the corner of Landau and Ramon in the former Azteca Furniture building.

Revivals, which raises funds for the Desert Aids Project, was previously located on Antique Row off Perez before it burned down in September.  The store has been in Cathedral City since 1990.  It is one of four Revivals operated throughout the Coachella Valley. Opening in the new larger quarters is expected in about six weeks.

Time off well spent

While most are enjoying the day off Monday, a local Boy Scout troop will be picking up trash on the bike trail lining the Whitewater Channel.  Public Works is providing trash bags for the industrious youths who are trying to earn badges.

Thanks, Neighbor

The Rancho Mirage City Council today approved a $10,000 donation to the Cathedral City Soccer Park.  The vote was unanimous.  City Clerk Elena Keeran said the Council took action “without blinking an eye.”  This donation is the latest to be made in the drive to raise $900,000 for the park.  Total cost of the park is estimated at $2 million.  Even though there is a current shortage of funding, the park will be built, either all at once or in phases, said Project Manager Leslie Grosjean.
