What a year it was !!!

At year’s end, just look at the accomplishments during the past 12 months in Cathedral City  many implementing goals of the City Council’s 2005 Strategic Plan developed last January: 

bulletProperty owners approve Cove and Dream Homes assessment districts for sewers and other improvements.
bulletParks and Recreation Master Plan, with heavy citizen focus group input, approved
bulletDeveloper fee justification study and Quimby ordinance (to help pay for parks improvements and land acquisition) finished. Council held first readings; final action slated for January.
bulletNeighborhood meetings held every other month to hear residents’ concerns and provide information on various city projects. Next one is at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at Agua Caliente School.
bullet Marketing plan developed and approved by Council; Marketing Committee appointed.
bulletProgress made on Sheraton Resort Hotel and Conference Center.  Utilities now being installed underground.
bulletBusiness retention program underway with Chamber of Commerce.
bulletFirst round of interviews set next week for six firms submitting quarterly city newsletter proposals.
bulletHeritage Park, 153-unit affordable apartment building for seniors, opens.
bulletDonation of Robert Thornley sculpture by Mr. and Mrs. Herman Heimann. It’s
bulletlocated in Paseo of Civic Center. 
bulletCity Council provides monthly updates on city projects at Chamber Power Breakfasts; city submits monthly Cityscape for Chamber of Commerce newsletter.
bulletAll landscape and lighting districts presented to property owners approved.
bulletCity website updated to be more user friendly.
bulletWeekly briefs sent to city employees.
bulletMore businesses sign up as tenants in the new downtown retail space, the Pickfair Promenade.
bulletRedevelopment Director, Community Development Director and Chief Building Official hired/named. 
bulletPlans for 17-acre soccer park east of James Workman School moving along.
bulletCommunity unifying Holiday Tree Lighting and Cathedral Festival held second Saturday in December; Fountainworks Festival held July 3.
bulletPlans made for implementation of red light camera installation and traffic enforcement unit in Police Department  both aimed at reducing traffic violations and enhancing safety.
bulletFire engine with multi-story suppression capability ordered.  Fire department takes delivery of two ambulances.
bullet35th Avenue neighborhood provided with sewers after approval of assessment district.
bulletDate Palm Drive bridge being widened to accommodate Union Pacific’s installation of second railroad track.
bulletContinued expansion of Cathedral City Auto Center to generate sales tax revenue for public services.
bullet Revamp of the city’s trade show exhibit booth, incorporating new city logo, marketing themes and latest demographics.  (Highlights: current population is 53.281; median household income is $45,806 and average household income is $59,485.) 
bulletTraffic congestion eased along East Palm Canyon Drive with elimination of green left-turn arrows.
bulletUpgrades to Dream Homes neighborhood begin, with help from code enforcement and housing divisions.  .
bullet Looking ahead to 2006, the current Strategic Plan will be updated for the new year at a Council meeting set for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at City Hall.

What’s ahead for the New Year?

In the meantime, here’s just a sampling of projects we can anticipate in 2006:

bulletDedication of the photovoltaic solar array on the roof of the downtown parking structure, cutting Civic Center energy costs by a third.
bulletGroundbreaking for the 300-room Sheraton Resort Hotel and golf course; Building “J” in the downtown; and a 100-room hotel east of IMAX.
bulletOpening of 75-unit affordable Tierra del Sol apartment complex, with Senior Center on first floor; completion of 61-unit market-rate apartments adjacent to Pickford Theatre.
bulletFurther expansion of the Cathedral City Auto Center
bulletOpening of the first phase of the soccer park
bulletMoving ahead with plans for development of the 25 acres east of the Mary Pickford Theatre.
bulletBeginning implementation of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
bulletConstruction starts on the Dream Homes and Cove sewer projects
