Ballots trickling in

As of Friday, 5,593 ballots had been turned in for the mail-in election to fill the vacant seat on the City Council.  That represents 29% of the 19,250 registered voters in Cathedral City. Deadline to return ballots to the Riverside County Registrar of Voters is May 3, which is actually “election day.”

Barking up our tree

With opening of the new Animal Campus in Thousand Palms this summer, there will probably be a need for city staff to issue dog licenses at the Civic Center. Discussion is starting now on a program and procedure to provide a closer location for the issuance of licenses than the main Thousand Palms operation.

Calling all volunteers

Twenty vacancies will occur on eight City Boards and Commissions.  The openings are on the Architectural Review Committee (3); Public Arts Commission (2); Planning Commission (3); Parks and Recreation Commission (2); Library Board (1); Streets and Transportation Commission (2); Mobile Home Fair Practices Commission (2); and Board of Appeals (5). Deadline for residents to fill out applications (available on website) and to apply is June 2.

Bad tumble

Sgt. Earl Moss will be out for about two weeks because of elbow and shoulder injuries he suffered while climbing over a fence. Others in the Police and Fire Departments have been running around (literally) the past several days in the Civic Center area as part of the testing required to qualify for the City’s Wellness Program.

Music to our ears

The spring Classic Concert sponsored by the Public Arts Commission will be held. Thursday, April 28, in the Council Chamber. The reception will begin at 6:30, with the concert starting at 7.  Both the reception with light refreshments and the concert are free.  The Canyon Classics quintet will perform.

Getting to YES

City representatives had a positive meeting this week with officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on permits for the proposed Desert Cove Golf Course. (This is an environmentally friendly version of the former Rita Carlton Golf Course – nine holes in the foothills and the other holes in the wash, west to Cathedral Canyon Golf Course.)

Inspector gone

Building Inspector Rustin Messenger has had to move to Santa Clarita to care for his aging parents who are in poor health.

Extra and stronger eyes

The Fire Department’s new Thermal Imaging Camera is expected to be here around the first of June.  This amazing equipment helps firefighters see right through the smoke of a burning building to locate possible survivors inside.

Funding needs are many

The Mayor, City Council members, staff and some community members have been holding a series of meetings with state and federal legislators and their representatives to discuss Cathedral City’s funding needs.  Among them are:  Cove sewers, soccer park, Date Palm Drive/I-10 interchange, soccer park, parkland and Ramon Road/bridge widening.

BIA luncheon here

Cathedral City will host the BIA (Building Industry Association) luncheon Tuesday (April 26) at the Doral Desert Princess Resort.  Various City representatives will talk about projects in construction and in economic development.

Putting up “Friends”

Public Works employees installed the “Friends of the Heart” sculpture in the Paseo  this week.  It involved pouring a concrete platform and erecting the limestone stature on top of it.  The stone, incidentally, comes from the former Chicago Stock Exchange building. The donors, Mr. and Mrs. E. Herman Heimann of Rancho Mirage, will be honored and the statue will be dedicated by the Public Arts Commission at 11 a.m. May 10.
