Coachella Valley Steel Drum Orchestra to Perform at Concert In The Square

Downtown Cathedral City plays host to Concerts in the Square, a 3-hour FREE concert held on the first Friday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. March's concert will occur on Friday, March 4, 2004. Performing for the March concert is the Coachella Valley Steel Drum Orchestra, the same group which appeared on the Desert Resorts Rose Parade float last month. Others groups will be confirmed at a later date. There will also be a short fashion show by Kay’s Design Fashion, food vendors and others activities. Cathedral City Civic Center, 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero, Cathedral City. Visit www.ccConcerts.com for more information.

ABOUT CONCERTS IN THE SQUARE - The mission of Concerts In The Square is to provide a safe environment in which people can celebrate life - where local artists share their talents, where community groups provide information, where volunteers experience the joys of giving to others, where diverse cultures and lifestyles come together to celebrate as a whole, where all ages intermingle in an atmosphere of respect and appreciation - bringing our community together. Concerts in the Square is sponsored by the Foundation for a More Livable Community, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Unlike other communities, the city does not fund Concerts in the Square. With the current budget constraints the city faces, it can only provide minimal services such as public works assistance, insurance, and city police. The event happens because of the committee’s hard work, and the generous donations from committee members and sponsors.

City Manager to the rescue

WOW !!! What a week … evacuations from City Hall two days in a row. First one caused by an intruder who dropped through a second-story window and the second one today caused by work being done (of all things) to the alarm system. Fortunately, the intruder was tracked by the City Manager, who was armed only with his cell phone. Just imagine if he had a badge or handcuffs. (Actually, the police did apprehend the culprit).

As a result of the intrusion, the police are reviewing the city’s security plans to determine if changes should be made.

Spreading the word out

The next community meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 15 at Sunny Sands School. The meeting will focus on issues related to the Century Park area, but all interested citizens are welcome to attend, because information will also be disseminated pertaining to the city as a whole.

Choice of four meetings for Cove

Next week is important for property owners in the Cove. A total of four meetings have been scheduled on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 21 and 22) regarding engineering design of streets, curbs and sewers. Property owners can attend any one of these meetings (or more, if they wish): 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday and 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, in the Council Chamber at City Hall. The same information will be presented at all meetings.

Mapping out the future

On Wednesday, Tri-Millennium will meet with the City Council regarding Council’s response to the Congleton market report, which proposed various villages and live-work units in the downtown core, including the south side of East Palm Canyon. Council wanted to see a brighter color palette, different elevations, varying setbacks and no live-work on East Palm Canyon, which they want reserved for commercial, or on Cathedral Canyon Drive. They will meet downstairs in the study session room from 3 to 5 p.m.

National Exposure

Big League Dreams will host the National Collegiate Women’s Fast Pitch Softball Tournament the weekend of Feb. 25-27. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. both Friday and Saturday and ends at 2:30 on Sunday. The Fire Department will provide paramedic services, which will be paid for by funds that had been set aside for the Pepsi All Star Games. Those games were cancelled for this year by the sponsor. Coeds and their families and friends from throughout the nation will be attending, boosting the city’s room taxes.

Skating through summer

Ice skating continues through next fall at the Ice Gardens, the former Heiling Myers building on East Palm Canyon Drive. City Council approved continuation of the temporary use after rejecting several offers for the building. A long-term use of the building will still be sought. As for ice skating, there should be no problem keeping the ice cold as the weather gets warmer because the operator has modified the ice-making machine and screened the glass windows to reduce heat from the sun.

More talks with Salvation Army

The Salvation Army building on Landau has received its final building inspection and is signed off. The organization is talking with city reps about various cooperative programs to enhance recreational opportunities for youths of the community.

Second Walgreen’s coming

Walgreen’s at the northwest corner of Date Palm and 30th Avenue is ready to break ground soon. The drug store chain’s policy is that stores have to be at least two miles apart. This store and the one at Date Palm and Dinah Shore just meet that criterion.

Credit where credit is due

OOOps, last week in the Briefs, I forgot to give credit to Richard Davis, Donna St. Onge, Sandra Martinez and Rebecca Winscott for the great work they are doing in Code Enforcement and to remove graffiti. By the way, in general, Public Works removes graffiti from public property and code enforcement removes it from private property, but not from people’s homes.

Calls for service up

There were 3,586 calls for service to the Police Department in January, an increase of about 150 over the same month last year. Auto thefts are up. Some good news: total arrests, assaults and burglaries were down.
